what
is SSL?
SSL Security on websites is common place when you are buying online or accessing your bank account online. You may regonise it from the green padlock that appears in your web browser when you are using services such as these.
But what is it? Well to get technical here SSL stands for ‘Secure Sockets Layer’. This is an internet protocol that encrypts data being sent a received between the public viewing a website and the server where the information is stored - we could go on but this is the basic principle behind it.
why do I need it on
my website?
Every website in world is under threat from hackers and groups of people wanting to use your own domain to attack the major brands, so really SSL security has a use for all websites. We view this very much like any insurance you take out in business, there is no right or wrong answer, it is a case of how you see the risk.
For example, we have no SSL security on our main website such as the page you are currently viewing; it is open for all to see and we have not asked you for any information to view the page (such as login details).
We could, however, be at risk to hackers and other groups getting into our server and databases to access our website and the information stored on it. As this information is in the public domain there is very little risk to us a business and our advanced hosting services deal with batting away hackers. So in our view SSL is not nessasary for this purpose.
If you are a client of ours and we ask you to login to our client area, then we are asking you to provide login details and in doing so we are storing private information about your business in this area. If this area were to be hacked we would therefore be at risk, so we do run an SSL certificate in this area that protects the information you are providing to us.
SSL can be good for many reasons; making it obvious that your website is secure and that you care about
this - for example, when you are completing a transaction online or storing private information online, to
name but a few.
